Here’s something for ice cream lovers! This crochet ice cream applique brings so much joy – whether as a decoration on a T-shirt or as bunting for your home.

Make the waffle cone in beige or brown. Then choose any color you like for the soft serve – light pink for strawberry, green for pistachio, or light yellow for vanilla, just to give you some inspiration.

You’ll need about 2 grams of each color, making these appliques perfect for using up your yarn stash.

The pattern works up in two parts. First, you’ll start with the cone, working from the bottom up. Then, you’ll crochet the soft serve on top of it, starting from the wider bottom and tapering toward the top.

As the final step, you’ll add slip stitches that “glide” down the soft serve, using the leftover loops. Sounds fun, doesn’t it? So let’s get into it!

soft serve ice cream

Crochet the soft serve to the waffle cone using the contrasting color. Hold the cone with the right side of the last round’s stitches facing you. Join the yarn to the front loop of the rightmost stitch.

1: Working in the front loops only: 3 sc in the first st, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, 3 dc in the last st [13]

2: Ch 1, turn. Working in the back loops only: skip first st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, skip last 3 sts [10]

3: Ch 1, turn. Working in the front loops only: skip first st, sc in next 3 sts, hdc in next 3 sts, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, skip last st [9]

4: Ch 1, turn. Working in the back loops only: skip first st, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, skip last 2 sts [7]

5: Ch 1, turn. Working in the front loops only: skip first st, sc in next 2 sts, hdc in next 2 sts, dc in next st, skip last st [5]

6: Ch 1, turn. Working in the back loops only: skip first st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next st, skip last st [3]

On the last row, we’ll start working from the top down, using the loops that were left unworked in the previous rows.

7: Ch 2, turn. Sl st in the second ch from the hook, then sl st in the back loops of next 3 sts.

Ch 1 and turn the work to access the front loops of row 5: sl st in the next 5 sts.

Again, ch 1 and turn the work to continue in the front loops of row 4: sl st in the next 7 sts. Ch 1.

Continue in the same manner, “gliding” down along the front loops of 9 sts of row 3, ch 1; 10 sts of row 2, ch 1; and finally 13 sts of row 1.

Weave in yarn ends.
