You can find the crochet baby doll pattern in the book Lovable Amigurumi Toys. This design was created especially for that book, which focuses entirely on dolls, and there’s no web version of the pattern available.

My inspiration was a baby under one year old, already sitting but not yet walking. The room is warm and cozy, and the baby sits on the floor wearing only a diaper. A little tuft of first hair has formed on top of the head, sticking up in the cutest way.

As with real babies, emotions swing quickly up and down. That’s why I experimented with two facial expressions for the baby doll: a smiling version and a crying one. I nicknamed them “happy baby” and “crying baby.”

For some reason, I always seem to do better with grumpy, sad, or serious faces, and this time was no exception. The crying baby with tears and a downturned mouth turned out to be my personal favorite.

The baby is crocheted with cotton yarn. If you prefer not to use safety eyes, you can stitch the eyes with black yarn as an alternative.

The pattern is wonderfully simple and uses only single crochet stitches, the basic stitch of amigurumi. The finished crochet baby doll is about 17 cm tall and is designed to sit.

The happy and crying babies can also be used as a playful way to teach children about emotions. Naming feelings isn’t always easy, but with the help of a doll, a child can point to which emotion they are experiencing at the moment.
