Meet my first crochet badger!

Recently I’ve had the chance to crochet a couple of completely new animals as custom orders – ones I hadn’t made before in my 17 years of designing amigurumi.

They’re actually both common wild animals here in Estonia – a crochet badger and an otter (you can read about the crochet otter here). While they’re familiar animals, they were brand new projects for me, which made them especially exciting.

The badger was commissioned by my son, who wanted to give it as a graduation gift to his badger-obsessed girlfriend. I only had a few days to make it, so there wasn’t much time for planning or second-guessing. It simply had to work on the first try.

I decided to be brave and combine different yarns, which has become one of my favourite techniques lately.

The badger is crocheted holding two strands together: Rico Organic Cotton DK and the soft, airy Drops Air. For the body I paired black Furry Furry eyelash yarn with a white yarn, creating a wonderfully textured fur effect.

Since everything happened so quickly from the first idea to wrapping it as a gift, I completely forgot to measure the finished toy. It’s made in a sitting position, but I would estimate it’s around 30 cm (12 inches) tall.
