Koala amigurumi – my very first koala

This is my very first koala amigurumi, and I’m so happy to share it with you!

I’ve created a koala crochet kit that includes everything you need to make your own little koala.

This koala is also the third character in my crochet kit series – after the baby elephant and the giraffe.

The story behind it

The story of this koala actually started in a funny way, because at first I had no intention of making a koala at all.

I thought a playful little monkey would fit nicely next to the elephant and the giraffe. But when I started working on it, it just didn’t turn out the way I had imagined. So I let the monkey idea go.

Maybe I say this a lot, but one thing always leads to another. Out of nowhere, I suddenly felt like trying a koala instead – and surprisingly, everything just started to fall into place.

Of course, I made several samples before finding the final version. And since real koalas can look a bit intimidating to me, it was especially important that mine would be soft, round, and truly cute.

What makes this koala special?

First of all, I really love the combination of two different yarns.

Alongside cotton yarn, I used a soft chenille yarn for the koala’s body and ears. A lovely little detail is that both yarns are exactly the same shade – this creates a soft, harmonious look and even gives it a slightly luxurious feel.

Second, definitely the detailed face, which I spent quite a lot of time perfecting.

To find the perfect expression, I looked through lots of koala illustrations, searched for plush toy references, and even used a bit of AI for inspiration. In the end, it was all worth it – the face turned out sweet, friendly, and not scary at all.

And finally, the position of the paws makes a big difference.

In my first versions, the legs were pointing forward and the arms were placed on the sides of the body. But the real charm appeared when I adjusted the pose so the koala seems to look slightly to the side.
Maybe it feels familiar – we’re used to seeing koalas in that relaxed pose, holding onto a eucalyptus branch.

Who is this for?

When creating my crochet kits, I always try to keep the designs simple enough so that anyone can enjoy making them.

This koala is slightly more challenging than my previous designs, mainly because of the chenille yarn. It’s soft and a bit fuzzy, which can make it harder to see and count stitches.

If you already have some crochet experience, it shouldn’t be a problem.
But if this is your very first project, it might require a bit more patience.

That’s why I would describe this kit as intermediate level.

Koalas live in Australia and have suffered greatly from wildfires in recent years, despite all the efforts to protect them.

Maybe that gives this little koala a deeper meaning – a way to create something beautiful while also thinking of this resilient and gentle animal.
