Meet Lucy the Elephant – my new amigurumi pattern. It`s the first animal in the new Amigurumi Cuties safari series. Two more characters will follow in the coming months.

The elephant is in a sitting position and 15 cm / 6 in height. Most of the parts are very basic and easy to make. Crocheting the legs is probably the most complicated step in this pattern. I´ve created a photo and video tutorial about working single crochet around the foundation chain. You`ll need this technique for starting the legs.

Another thing I know many of you are afraid of is adding fabric to amigurumi. I want to encourage you and tell that many people have found this tutorial really helpful. They no longer find working with fabric scary or impossible. The fabric gives so much color and liveliness to the toy. As you can see from the photos, I´ve matched the colors of the flowers with the colors of the fabric. It`s a great tip for getting beautiful, harmonious result.

I just have to tell you the story behind my elephant`s name. I was inventing the names for all 3 safari animals when I suddenly came up with Lucy the Elephant. It sounded really nice, so I had made my choice. Yesterday, when I started writing an Instagram post about my new pattern and wanted to create a hashtag, I suddenly discovered #lucytheelephant with nearly 10K posts!!! I was more than surprised to discover Lucy the Elephant is the oldest surviving roadside tourist attraction in America, New Jersey. Who would have thought!
